You love your mom, right? I know I love mine. Like most folks, my mom is who I turn to when I’m hurt. She’s who I turn to when I’m confused, or sick, or when I’m just not sure of things. I take comfort from her gentle hands and warm voice. I’ll bet that you’re a bit like me in feeling like you don’t know where or who you’d be without Mom.
That’s why if she were prescribed oxygen, here are the two things I would demand she receive:
A portable oxygen concentrator, and
A reliable local medical equipment provider.
Why? Because I love my mom and I want the best for her. I want to make sure that she has the freedom to live her life on her terms. I want to make sure that she has the easiest possible time on oxygen therapy.
Portable Oxygen Concentrators Are a Better Choice
Mom’s a strong woman. She must be; she raised me! But that doesn’t mean she needs to be saddled with the kind of heavy oxygen tanks. Which is what most hospitals will give patients as they try to push them out the door. Or what many medical equipment providers will force on clients.
It doesn’t mean she ought to have to pick and choose what she gets to do. She shouldn’t have to ration her tank-time between working a job she still loves and taking her grandbabies to the park or the museum. She shouldn’t have to tell my daughter or my nephew “Sorry, Honey, Grandma can’t go, because she doesn’t have enough tanks.”
Even if she can get enough tanks to let her make it through a whole month at a time, she shouldn’t have to say “Sorry, Baby, Grandma can’t hold hands. She’s got to drag her tank with her.” And that is what she’d have to say if she were carting around one of the heavy oxygen tanks that vendors provide with all the valves, dials, and carts that using a tank demands.
No, it’d be far better to have a portable oxygen concentrator. Even with extra batteries, they weigh 6 pounds or less, so Mom would be able to devote her strength to doing what she wants to do with her day.
They plug into car-chargers and wall outlets, so she’d be able to maintain a steady oxygen flow wherever she goes. They last for three to four hours on a single charge, so she’d be able to show up for her grandson’s next game without worrying about running out of air.
And they don’t require frequent replacing and exchanging, so Mom would be able to go to work or visit friends rather than going to the store again and again to get new tanks.
It sounds like a better deal to me.
A Reliable Local Provider Is Your Best Bet
It’s not the only thing that does, either.
Hours spent on hold going through automated phone trees is not what I want for my Mom. Nor do I want her to deal with people that don’t care about her.
She could drive into some big city to find an office tucked away in some grimy strip mall that’s only open half the day.
Or she could put in an online report about some piece of equipment going haywire and must go to the hospital because the report gets lost or doesn’t get addressed in time.
But why would she do all this when there’s a better way? Mom could make the wise decision to go with a reliable local provider.
She could go to someone who’s part of her community, who knows the physicians in the area and who will take the time to talk to her and find out about her oxygen needs. Oxygen therapy is usually a long-term thing, rather than a one-off event, so someone who has roots in the area is going to care more than someone who never sees her.
A better solution is a local company that is close to the errands she regularly runs is more ideal. A company that has caring employees looking out for her is even better!
She could go to someone with 24-hour on-call service in her community, so that even if something does go wrong, somebody’s on hand to help make it right.
