Men over 40 are diagnosed more frequently, although the risk for women rises substantially after menopause due to hormonal and anatomical changes that affect airway stability during sleep.
Patients with a family history of sleep apnea may also carry a higher risk, particularly if close relatives have experienced loud snoring, CPAP use, or been diagnosed with breathing disorders during sleep.
Physicians are especially attentive to sleep apnea symptoms in patients with heart disease, irregular heart rhythms, stroke history, or persistent fatigue because untreated OSA significantly increases cardiovascular risk. People with untreated sleep apnea have a 71% higher risk of cardiovascular events or death than those without OSA. In one study, 26.3% of people with OSA experienced a cardiovascular event or died within four years, compared to 17.5% of matched controls. SOURCE

One of the biggest reasons sleep apnea remains untreated is that many patients never realize their symptoms are connected.

How Sleep Apnea Is Diagnosed Today
Diagnosis usually begins with a conversation about symptoms, sleep patterns, medical history, and overall health. Physicians look for recognizable patterns, particularly when morning headaches occur alongside snoring, fatigue, hypertension, or witnessed breathing pauses during sleep.
For many patients, home sleep testing is the next step. These studies are performed in the patient’s own bed using portable monitoring equipment that tracks breathing, oxygen levels, airflow, and sleep-related respiratory events overnight.
Some patients still require an in-lab sleep study, especially when symptoms are more complex or when additional sleep disorders may be involved. But testing today is far more accessible and patient-friendly than many people expect.
Once testing is completed, physicians review what is called the Apnea-Hypopnea Index, or AHI, which measures how often breathing disruptions occur each hour during sleep. That information helps determine whether sleep apnea is mild, moderate, or severe and guides treatment recommendations moving forward.
For many patients, the biggest surprise is not the test itself. It is discovering how disrupted their sleep has actually been for years without fully realizing it.
What Treatment Changes
